Guardian Marine Rescue - Volunteer Expectations

As a volunteer with Guardian Marine Rescue (GMR), you are committing to being part of a dedicated team that upholds the highest standards of professionalism, safety, and community service. The following outlines the expectations for all volunteers:

1. Conduct:

  • Maintain professionalism and respect in all interactions with the public, fellow volunteers, and partner agencies.

  • Represent GMR positively at all times.

2. Training:

  • Participate in regular training to ensure operational readiness.

  • SAR crew members are expected to complete a minimum of 25 hours of sea training per season and maintain an average annual commitment of 60 to 80 hours.

3. Communication:

  • Respond promptly to messages and scheduling requests.

  • Maintain reliable access to communication tools including Signal, email, and, when applicable, Microsoft Teams.

4. Availability:

  • Accurately and honestly update your availability using the SMS system.

  • Make all reasonable efforts to attend scheduled training, calls, and events.

5. Compliance:

  • Abide by all GMR policies and safety procedures.

  • Maintain current certifications as required for your role, including Pleasure Craft Operator Card (PCOC), Marine Radio certification (ROC-M), and Standard First Aid & CPR.

6. Background Screening:

  • Undergo a Vulnerable Sector Check (police clearance) as a condition of membership and every two years thereafter.

7. Confidentiality:

  • Treat all sensitive information regarding operations and individuals with discretion and confidentiality.

8. Fundraising and Events:

  • Participate in organizational fundraising activities and community engagement as needed.

Failure to meet these expectations may result in probation or removal from the organization at the discretion of the Board.
